Hagia Eirene, also known as the Church of Holy Peace, is an Orthodox church located in the outer courtyard of Topkapı Palace in Constantinople.
History[edit | edit source]
Formerly the site of a pre-Christian temple, the temple was restored by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I during the 6th century after it was burned down. Since then, it has served as an Orthodox church for almost 1000 years.[1]
After the Ottoman conquest, the church was converted into an armory for the Janissaries due to its close proximity to the royal palace.[1]
Today, the church operates as a museum and a music hall.[1]
