The Battle of Cynwit took place on January 878 in the final stages of the 9th century Viking expansion into England. It was fought between the forces of Ubba Ragnarsson and the Wessex forces under Ealdorman Odda of Devon.
The Battle of Cynwit[edit | edit source]
Under King Alfred's orders,[2] Ealdorman Odda led his troops to attack an encampment near Uffentune. The encampment composed of the last Son of Ragnar Ubba Ragnarsson and his company. Ambushed, Ubba and his men began to fight off Odda's forces but became overwhelmed. Ubba was finally killed after Anglo-Saxon soldiers impaled him with multiple spears.[3]
Aftermath[edit | edit source]
Within days after Ubba's demise, a treaty was made between the Great Heathen Army's leader Guthrum and King Alfred the Great at Werham. When the Viking jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir arrived, negotiations soured as Alfred detailed that Ubba had been killed earlier along the Afon River. As a result, Guthrum and his allies reneged on the truce, burned down Werham, and fled Alfred's reinforcements to evade capture. To verify, Eivor traveled to the location and found Ubba and his men dead.[3] The downfall of Ubba echoed across the shire as Geirmund Hel-hide and his Hel-hides found a trail of dead Vikings coinciding with the confirmation of Ubba's death.[4]
