Many people who I helped in the past always spelled "xertion.org" wrong, and tried using the SSL port without enabling the SSL protocol in the client. If you were typing in 6697 as the port, did you make sure that you told it to accept the certificate and to use SSL for all servers? If those two boxes aren't checked, it won't connect. If you don't check those two boxes you have to use 6667 as the port number. My best guess is you're using either the Mac version of HexChat or the older XChat client. (They're both essentially the same program) or Colloquy.
