Which Assassin's Creed game are you talking about, first of all, because I'm just going to assume you mean AC3.  With previous Assassin's Creed installments, AC2, ACB and ACR... Ezio was able to dive roll between a line of enemies when escaping the area... this is done by sprinting and pressing the B/O button to perform a tackle but instead of tackling.... Ezio would dive roll, thereby avoiding being hit by the guards.  In AC3, though I've never tried... I would assume it's a similar reaction... if you try to make Connor tackle a guard in a line of stationed enemies, he'll dive roll instead.
