"My God names you the Crow-Eyed Devil. And He sends out his angels to find you and kill you. And then they will fling you into the pits of Hell, demon."
―Aelfwyn to Eivor before dying, 870s.[src]-[m]

Aelfwyn (died 870s) was an Anglo-Saxon nun and self-proclaimed saint who lived during the 9th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

A devoted member of the church dedicated to Saint Edmund, Aelfwyn dedicated herself to eliminating any trespassing Vikings, considering them as pagan sinners who despoiled the sacred grounds. By the 870s, she based herself at a ruined church in East Anglia that was dedicated to Saint Edmund and had killed numerous Vikings who entered the church.[1]

When the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan entered the church, she met Aelfwyn who treated her as a trespasser too. Aelfwyn attacked Eivor, forcing her to defend herself and defeat Aelfwyn in battle.[1]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Aelfwyn shares the same name as the noble lady from the House of Wessex, who ruled Mercia for a few months in 918. The name is a combination of Old English elements aelf meaning "elf" and wynn meaning "joy".
