Richard Thompson was an English politician who served in the Caribbean as acting Governor of the Bahamas[1] from 1732 – 1733[2] following Woodes Rogers' death in his second term. He was also the father-in-law of the pirate John Cockram.[3]
Thompson began as a merchant in the Bahamas and made himself a fortune at Harbor Island where he was based[4] by reselling pirates' stolen loot to New England's uncaring or unaware populace.[3] In time, his wealth grew so great that pirates viewed him as the sole man responsible for running the area.[4]
In March 1718, Charles Vane had gathered an army and intended to loot the island before the Royal Navy would. When Thompson refused to tell where his gold was located, Vane marooned him on a deserted islet and left to hunt for it.[4]
Alonzo Batilla, while searching for La Buse, rescued Thompson in exchange for information on the whereabouts of his friend.[4]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Richard Thompson is a historical figure introduced in the 2013 mobile spin-off Assassin's Creed: Pirates, though it refers to him only by his surname and gives no details about his later life.
