The Merchant King's Palace was the residence of Damascus' merchant king Abu'l Nuqoud, located in the Rich District of the city. A recluse who kept to his personal quarters out of shame, Abu'l Nuqoud rarely left the palace, emerging chiefly to preside over the lavish parties he threw there each week, opening his doors to the people of Damascus.[1][2] He decorated his palace with gaudy works of art, and a fountain stood at the heart of the building.[3]
