Pope Pius II (1405 – 1464), born Enea Silvio Bartolomeo Piccolomini, was Pope from 1458 to his death. He was a noted Renaissance humanist and the author of numerous writings.
A year after his election in 1459, Pius II raised his native town to city status and Episcopal residence, under the new name Pienza, derived from Pius.
