The English military was the military of the Kingdom of England.
In the Third Crusade, it was led by King Richard the Lionheart as one of the factions of Crusaders,[1] for which they were known as the Lionheart Crusaders.[2] Although he also acted as the supreme commander of the Crusader forces, with the Knights Hospitalier and the Knights Templar falling under his leadership, the Lionheart Crusaders were the only army under his direct control and truly loyal to him.[2] For this reason, they did not participate in the Templar conspiracy to murder him at the Battle of Arsuf.[3]
The English army invaded the Kingdom of France in the 14th century, precipitating the Hundred Years' War which they would ultimately lose in 1453. The expeditions involved heavy razing and pillaging of the countryside, causing severe disruptions to the French economy.[4]
During the English Civil War, the English military was divided between the Roundheads, those who were supported the English Parliament, and the Royalists, those who were loyal to King Charles II.[5]
