Ferrara is a city located in the region of Romagna in northern Italy, and the birthplace of the friar Girolamo Savonarola.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
Ferrara was ruled by the House of Este, who held the city from 1208 to 1597. During the Renaissance, the Dukes of Ferrara were known for their patronage of artists and for their palaces, among which was the Delizia di Belriguardo, located 15 kilometers outside the city.[2]
In 1506, the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze travelled to the Delizia di Belriguardo to confront Lucrezia Borgia, the Duchess of Ferrara at the time, and retake the paintings stolen by her family after the Fall of Monteriggioni. Ultimately, Ezio managed to recover Leonardo da Vinci's Annunciation and learned that the remaining paintings could be found in Rome.[3]
