- "If the least violence be offered to their Majesties the king, the queen and the royal family, we will inflict an ever memorable vengeance by delivering over the city of Paris to military execution and complete destruction, and the rebels guilty of the said outrages to the punishment that they merit."
- ―The Duke of Brunswick in his manifesto, 1792.[src]-[m]
Charles William Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (9 October 1735 – 10 November 1806) was the Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, a sovereign prince of the Holy Roman Empire, and a general of Prussia and Austria during the French Revolution. In 1792, he commanded the Prussian army that invaded France.
Royalist sympathizers in Les Invalides planned to signal to Duke Ferdinand that Paris was weak through their Chappe towers, but through the efforts of the French Assassin Arno Dorian, the towers were disabled.[1]
