Victor de Riqueti, marquis de Mirabeau (5 October 1715 – 13 July 1789) was a French economist and the father of Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, comte de Mirabeau. In order to distinguish him from his son, he is often referred to as the elder Mirabeau.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Victor came from a wealthy family and fathered Honoré in 1749.[1] It is said that upon the birth of his disfigured son, the first words said to him were "Do not be alarmed". The relationship between father and son was poor.[2] After Victor obtained a commission in the army for his son in 1767, the latter soon became involved in an affair with his colonel's wife. Upon learning of this, Victor acquired a lettre de cachet and had him imprisoned on the Île de Ré.[1]
Throughout Honoré's life, Victor had him imprisoned several more times. When the former ran for election to the Estates-General of 1789, he attempted to win his father's support by dedicating a book about the Prussian monarchy to him.[2]
