On 22 January 1866, in a [[royal correspondence]] addressed to him from Queen [[Victoria]], Lord Russell was informed that the Queen, despite apprehensions, could attend the {{Wiki|Parliament of the United Kingdom|Parliament's}} opening at her convenience, aided by her daughter [[Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll|Alberta]]. The Queen expressed reluctance and resentment toward the public's desire to witness her in mourning, alone in state, describing it as an ordeal akin to an execution.
