'''Fort Santiago''' (Spanish: ''Fuerte de Santiago'') is a former citadel in [[Manila]], [[Philippines]], which has since become a historical landmark. It was built from 1590 to 1593 on the order of {{Wiki|Miguel López de Legazpi}}, the first {{Wiki|Governor-General of the Philippines}}. During the [[Spain|Spanish]] administration of Manila between the 16th and 19th centuries, the fort served as a prison for numerous criminals, war prisoners and political enemies of Spain.<ref name="Wiki">{{WP|Fort Santiago}}</ref>

==History==
In 1725, after [[Jan van Aert]], the Chief Navigator of the [[Dutch East India Company]], was arrested on allegations of orchestrating the [[assassination]] of Governor-General [[Fernando Manuel de Bustillo Bustamante y Rueda]], he and his [[ship]]'s crew were imprisoned in the dungeon underneath Fort Santiago. After taking advantage of a protest in the streets to break into the fort undetected, Edward incapacitated the guards and freed Jan and his crew. As he escorted them out of the fort, Edward decided to ask Jan if he was indeed responsible for Bustamante's assassination. Before the navigator could respond, both he and Edward witnessed the protest outside turn into a violent [[1725 Manila riot|riot]], which the Asssassin went to investigate, leaving Jan and his crew to find their way back to their ship by themselves.<ref name="EP 51" />
