Music in the medieval Islamic world was organised around the modal melodic system, built from short groups of notes whose intervals and motifs shape the melody. A mode sets a starting note, common melodic routes, and points of tension and rest, guiding how a melody develops over time. Performance was largely improvisatory, with musicians elaborating these rules through memorised patterns, gradual development, and movement between related modes. Musical knowledge was mainly transmitted orally rather than through notation, with instruments such as the lute and zither (strings), the flute (wind), and percussion supporting melody and rhythm. Modes were associated with particular emotions, acting upon the soul.

From a shared tradition, regional styles gradually developed, with Arab, Persian, and later Islamic music focusing on different ways of using modes. Abbasid theorists such as al-Farabi (d. 951 CE) integrated Greek musical theory, especially Pythagorean ideas, into the Arabic framework. In the Great Book on Music, for example, scales are presented in tables of pitches, numerical values, and intervals, accompanied by symbols resembling Greek notation.
