Composed of both open fields and walled gardens<ref name= "DB AlUla Oasis"/> with elevated walkways, the oases produced wheat and barley in winter and dates in late summer and early autumn. Under the Nabataean Kingdom, cotton was also cultivated.<ref name= "DB Oasis Irrigation"/> From the early 8th century CE, already under [[Islam]]ic control, came the implementation of an underground qanat system which made it possible to carry water from the aquifer to the fields, where it was then distributed among the plots through surface channels,<ref name= "DB Oasis Life"/> as well as the introduction of a variety of citrus fruits.
