Animus mods in previous games[edit source]

This is an ongoing discussion.

I'd say that weapons that aren't part of the base game nor its DLCs could be considered as Animus mods, regardless if they are historically accurate or not, unless stated in the weapon's description. For example, every downloadable item available through Uplay/Ubisoft Club/Ubisoft Connect should be considered Animus mod unless stated in the item that the protagonist got it during the main story and DLCs.
But I gotta admit, Animus mods would be something I'd consider just for Origins onwards. It's strange to use it for older games but it's true that we gotta do something with those as well, no?
What do you think?

I like your idea Cris. I also would heavily dispute treating DLC weapons before Origins as "Animus mods", except perhaps those in Syndicate. The weapon racks in AC2 and Brotherhood clearly make room for the bonus weapons, so that they always seemed incomplete without them. AC3's bonus weapons are tied to DLC missions we treat as canonical and in any case, Obwandiyag's War Club is perhaps the most fitting as Connor's long weapon as opposed to the replica swords. Also I'm not sure if you're going to keep the {{OOU}} template for the Animus mod section, but those templates are always for a whole page and go at the top of the page, hence why the notice leads with "This article". If we're exploring a restructuring of the weapon list sections, this may be the time to address the elephant in the room that no matter how we look at it, the inclusion of the stats necessarily makes these OOU and a major exception to the IU-perspective policy. The more we try to shape the section to fit with an IU-perspective, the more awkward or uncanny it may end up looking since weapon stats are at the end of the day explicit gameplay info. I even wonder if we should move weapon stats to BTS or really have to consider implementing a gameplay tab system like the League of Legends wiki uses. I was trying to come up with a way that anything included in like the season pass or ultimate edition could be considered canonical (mainly because I really wanted the Horus pack to be real) but given that some of those (berserker and the upcoming sekiryu) include crazy mounts that was a bust. But let's take inventory of the older games:
  • Looking at the Syndicate packs I'd say Streets of London Pack gear can be canonical, Victorian Legends Pack specifically calls itself "Animus trickery" while the descriptions of the gear are just quotes from the classic novels that inspired it, Steampunk Pack meanwhile calls itself an "Animus hack" but the gear descriptions are from the perspective of their purported inventor speaking to Jacob and Evie.
  • Unity, Secrets of the Revolution Pack, Revolutionary Armaments Pack, and Underground Armory Pack can all be considered canon (the first even includes actual missions) and I would even argue that Unity's Uplay should also be considered canon since they complete one of the gearsets from the other packs. Syndicate's Uplay gear could go either way.
  • Rogue's Templar Legacy Pack would be canon (and the packs it subsumed). However it's Ubisoft Club stuff would not since the Unity Sword and Katana and Wakizashi both mention being added via the Animus; the Edward's Pistols don't have that phrasing but I'd still consider that a modification.
  • Black Flag's Illustrious Pirates Pack would be canon adding the new location, Guild of Rogues and Blackbeard's Wrath are multiplayer only, Crusader & Florentine Pack I'd say is non canon even though the weapon descriptions present themselves as canon, Kraken Ship Pack and Death Vessel Pack could go either way, the Uplay Blades of Toledo and outfit present themselves as canon and in a better way than the Crusader & Florentine gear, I'd also say Edward Kenway's Unique Swords would be canon, the product promotion Dr Pepper's Dual Cleavers and Schtick's Wilkinson figurehead could be either, the remaining ship customization items could be canon (even though some of it seems weird) since a lot of it completes sets found via the fleet missions and naval contracts (even though some of those also seem weird) barring the Aveline figurehead which explicitly says "Animus trickery".
  • Liberation is hard due to the various version bundling things in different ways but I'd just consider it all canon.
  • III's The Hidden Secrets Pack can all be canon which I think covers everything but the uplay legacy outfits which would be non canon.
  • Revelations... not sure how we want to deal with the outfit customizations (Altair, Brutus, Turkish Assassin) but otherwise everything in The Lost Archive would be canon and I'd be fine with the Uplay weapons (Schiavona, Milanese Sword, Captain's Sword) being canon as well.
  • Brotherhood doesn't have much mainly outfits (Helmschmied Drachen Armor, Florentine Noble, Armor of Altair, Altair' robes) probably mods and the Project Legacy capes which I could see being canon.
  • II has the Bloodlines weapon which we can consider canon and the Altair robes (not armor) outfit which would be mod.
The fact that the early games don't have flavor text for a lot of the stuff makes it hard to tell how it is supposed to be presented. So the going through that what should we designate as mods since there are some up in the air or contested. An additional snag is the Gothic Pants from the Gothic Pack mentions Reda in it's description but I think its the only Valhalla MTX gear to do something like that. As for the OOU template I was adding that since the availability cell is OOU for those weapons (and now some of the canon ones as well) but I could just do that via footnote like with DLC added weapons. Stats wise I disagree, that's just how the animus handles their interaction with the various enemy archetypes. Unity pretty much confirms this by allowing you to use the Animus to boost stats.
