A moray eel

Moray eels are a family of eels found in most of the world's oceans, though nearly all species occur in tropical regions such as the Caribbean Sea.

Living at rocky shorelines, coral reefs and shipwrecks, moray eels hide in crevices by day and forage for food by night. Their body is covered by a layer of mucus that protects it from parasites, while also giving it a greenish hue. Although they are generally benign to humans, they will bite if surprised or touched. As well as this, the eel's flesh can lead to ciguatera poisoning if eaten.

History[edit | edit source]

During the early 18th century, the pirate and later Assassin Edward Kenway encountered numerous hostile eels while diving in the West Indies.[1] Alonzo Batilla also found them as he was fishing.[2]

In 2023, Edward's descendant Noa Kim stumbled onto an eel nest while exploring the shipwreck of the SS Ourang Medan to find a crescent-shaped Piece of Eden.[3] The eels quickly turned hostile and chased Noa, who escaped by sealing himself in a room, which happened to be where the Piece of Eden was located.[4]
