Mehmet II (1432 – 1481), also written as Mehmed II (Turkish: II Mehmet; Ottoman Turkish: Mehmed-i sani) and commonly known as Mehmed the Conqueror, was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from from August 1444 to September 1446 and then again from February 1451 to May 1481.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Using an Apple of Eden, he conquered the city of Constantinople,[2] killed the last Byzantine Emperor, Constantine XI and brought the Byzantine Empire to its demise at the age of 21.[1]

In 1459, he initiated the construction of the Topkapı Palace in Constantinople, then called Yeni Sarayi or "New Palace". The palace served as the official residence of the Ottoman Sultans for almost 400 years until 1856.[3]

In 1480, he had his portrait painted by the Venetian artist Gentile Bellini, after having recently signed a peace treaty with Venice.[4]
