Ventre de Paris

Ventre de Paris (English: The Belly of Paris) was one of Paris' seven major districts in the 18th century. It was located in the north of the city and consisted of the Porte Saint-Denis, Halles, and Hôtel de Ville sub-districts. One major landmark was the Cour des Miracles, a dangerous slum occupied by thousands of beggars and "ruled" by the Roi des Thunes, who relied on donations from citizens to make a living.
