The only way I see the series truly reclaiming its former glory is if Assassin's Creed V reveals that reptilians (reptiloids) are actually behind the whole Templar / Assassin conflict.

The game reveals that, in ancient times, when homo sapiens began to rise in number, due to changing their methods of gathering food and thus, increasing their number of offspring, the reptilians -- a near-extinct species that has went into hiding; they used to rule planet Earth until the asteroid that exterminated their larger, more vicious counterparts (dinosaurs), left them on the brink of extinction -- devise an elaborate plan to reclaim what was once theirs, as they have deemed the homo sapiens unworthy of inheriting Earth (can't blame them; we are violent, power-craving demons who will never experience true world peace and full cooperation with each other).

In the game, we get to play as certain reptilian Assassins and Templars in disguise that shape the Assassin / Templar conflict into what they want it to be, with their endgame being initiating a nucl3ar holocaust that will exterminate the human species (and, due to being reptilian, they will be able to survive the harsh, radioactive conditions that will follow this event).

Then they re-claim Earth for their own once more, began to finally develop technology for their species, and then they colonize the universe, until they meet other alien species. They, however, dominate all other species in the universe due to their highly-advanced intellect that enabled them to reclaim Earth in the first place.
