I personally disagree. I liked Ezio much better than Altair. Not because Ezio had better game play mechanics (except Taunt. That's fun). I liked Ezio's personality better. Altair still had an awesome personality, but Ezio was just more fun. I also like Ezio's character development from novice to Master Assassin in AC2.
In AC1, Altair is a Master Assassin, who gets stripped of his rank, but maintains his same personality. There is character development for sure because he becomes more humble, but Ezio has much, much more.
Ezio learns how to respect the dead, have no hatred for his enemies (for the most part), learn not to become who he hunts, and mature. I really like that better.
