Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, commonly known as the Tower of London, is a historic castle located in the City of London, London on the north bank of the River Thames. It is protected by the Royal Guard, who are overseen by a constable.[1]

At the fortress's center lies the White Tower, which was originally conceived as a residence for royalty but has served a host of other functions throughout history, most prominently that of a prison. Its current and most famous function, however, is the resting place of the British Crown Jewels.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In 1696, during the Great Recoinage, William Chaloner was held in the Tower following the exposure of his counterfeiting activities by the British Assassin Omar Khaled and Sir Isaac Newton.[2]

At some point in the 1720s or 1730s, the British Assassins' leader Edward Kenway secreted in the Tower a cache containing a Shroud of Eden.[3] In 1847, Queen Victoria's husband, the Prince Consort Albert, found the cache and relocated it to a vault built beneath Buckingham Palace.[4]

In 1868, the Tower was overrun by men under the command of the British Templar Lucy Thorne, who was searching for the Shroud, having read about it in Edward Kenway's journal and being unaware of its relocation. At the same time, the Assassin Evie Frye infiltrated the Tower to eliminate Thorne and prevent her from finding the Shroud. She killed the Templars masquerading as Royal Guardsmen, rescued the Tower garrison's Constable Miller, disguised herself as a prisoner, and assassinated Thorne before fleeing as the Royal Guard retook the Tower.[3]

Later that year, the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire, Duleep Singh, organized with Evie and her twin brother Jacob Frye the heist of the Koh-i-Noor diamond, which was allegedly stored in the Tower, in order to send it back to India. During a party held at the Tower, Templars associated with the British Indian Company stole the diamond and planted it on Singh, intending to frame the Maharaja for theft and sabotage India and Britain's diplomatic relations. Fortunately, Jacob recovered the jewel before Singh was searched by the guards and handed it to his sister, who smuggled the diamond out of the Tower.[5]

In 1916, during World War I, a spy known as the Magpie was held prisoner in the Tower of London. As he was about to reveal the Assassins' existence, Lydia Frye, Jacob's granddaughter, infiltrated the Tower and killed the spy.[6]
