Sorry to be butting in, and if I'm not supposed to, just ignore this:
Isn't it an idea to make it 400 edits, of which at least <insert number here> edits must be mainspace edits? That way you still count the "community interaction" and the edit count is slightly more manageable, yet you can still be sure the would-be apprentice has contributed enough to articles as well. Just my thoughts, you may ignore them if you so desire xD
