Saint Christopher (died c. 251) is venerated by several Christian denominations as a martyr killed in the reign of the 3rd century Roman Emperor Decius. In the 14th century, the Italian penitential order called the Humiliati erected the Chiesa della Madonna dell'Orto in Venice and dedicated it in his honor. However, when a "miraculous" statue of Mary, mother of Jesus was found in a nearby orchard, the church was renamed.[1]
