Plutarch
Plutarch (c. 46 – c. 120), also known as Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus once he became a Roman citizen, was a Greek priest, philosopher and writer. He is best remembered for Parallel Lives, in which he coupled several biographies of notable Greeks, each with a Roman counterpart.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Circa 100, Plutarch published Moralia, a collection of 78 essays covering many subjects. One such essay was titled On Isis and Osiris, in which Plutarch gave the most simplified and complete summary of the Egyptian myth of Isis and Osiris.[1] In his collection of biographies, Parallell Lives, published sometime during the 2nd century, Plutarch noted in the Life of Antony section how Cleopatra was the only Ptolemaic ruler to speak the Egyptian language.[2]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
In the early 16th century, the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze bought a copy of Plutarch's Parallel Lives from a book shop in Constantinople.[3] Another copy of the book was possessed by Charlotte Corday during the 18th century.[4]
