The eight-mile stretch of coastline on either side of the town of Dover is renowned for its striking, sheer with cliffs of chalk. The chalk is made up of countless trillions of coccoliths, the skeletons of tiny algae, piled up in layers and crushed. Quite macabre, when you think about it.
