The Masjid Al'Itham, or the Mosque of Bones, illustrates the historical importance of AlUla's Old Town as a stop along the Muslim pilgrimage route to Medina and Mecca. According to tradition, the Prophet Muhammad himself once stopped there to pray while on his way to Tabuk. Unable to find suitable stones to mark the qibla (the direction of prayer), he used animal bones instead. In honor of this event, the local population later built a mosque on that very spot.
