The only Port Royal fort that survived the earthquake of 1692. Built circa 1660, it is made of brick with gunports for its cannons. Concerned about a Spanish attack and lacking manpower to defend Fort Charles, the administrators of Port Royal welcomed pirates and buccaneers to the town. The pirates gained a safe haven and Port Royal gained plenty of manpower for defense.
