Database: Flora of the Oasis
Thanks to its extraordinary natural setting—particularly its underground water resources, enhanced by human activity over millennia—the AlUla oasis is home not only to a rich and varied native flora, but the main valley has proven to be especially well suited to diversified agriculture, giving rise to the oasis there. Date palms play a decisive role: beyond their famous fruit, these trees are essential for providing shade, protection from the wind, and materials for building shelters, making furniture, producing rope, or even crafting jewellery. The groves and orchards of other kinds of fruit, especially citrus—lemons, oranges, and others—have been characteristic of the area since the Islamic period.
Because of high summer heat, the most effective approach to cultivation is tiered: the date palm canopy provides dappled shade for other fruit trees to thrive below and vine plus other crops grow well at ground level. Among the other notable plants of the region is Moringa peregrina, a graceful small tree whose fruits yield ben oil, prized for its properties since antiquity. Native trees such as the umbrella thorn and grey-haired acacia also shape the broader ecosystem, acting as keystone species that stabilise soils, fix nitrogen, and sustain wildlife from insects to the Arabian oryx.
