Bastard son of Charles the Fat and an unknown mother, Bernard was taken under wing by Richardis who determined to raise him well despite his father's failings. Both monarchs wanted Bernard on the throne, but for different reasons. He was a decent enough lad who outgrew the plans others had for him.
