Alfhild's grave visited by Eivor

Alfhild (died c. 870s) was a Norse woman and the wife of the renowned berserkr Bjorn Bloodtooth.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Originating from Norway like her husband, Alfhild and Bjorn migrated to England for a fresh start after Bjorn grew tired of the endless killing and battles. The two settled down in the Kingdom of East Anglia, where they found and adopt a white bear cub whom they raised in lieu of a child and named Njal.[1]

The family's peace did not last long, as Bjorn's reputation had even reached England from Norway. A Mercian lord, desiring to fight and boost his reputation by killing Bjorn, demanded that he drink the berserkr brew before their fight. When Bjorn refused, the Mercian lord responded by hanging Alfhild beneath the gallows tree south of Beodoricsworth.[2]

Alfhild was subsequently buried near the gallows tree by Bjorn, who desired and sought revenge, but being heavily outnumbered by the Mercian lord and his men, he was forced to spend his time hiding in a cave with Njal. Some time later, Alfhild's death was ultimately avenged when the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir aided Bjorn in eliminating the Mercian lord and his men in Beodoricsworth.[1]
