Aekuni Shrine is a Shinto shrine in the city of Iga,[1] which served as the Ichinomiya of the province during the Sengoku period.[2]
History[edit | edit source]
The shrine served as the assembly point of the Iga ikki during the 16th century, where they would meet to renew their vows to their league. On 30 September 1581, Naoe, the daughter of jōnin Fujibayashi Nagato, attended her first assembly at the shrine since joining the league in 1579.[3]
As the assembly was underway, the Igans were interrupted by the arrival of Hattori Hanzō, who warned the league of Oda Nobunaga's impending invasion. This led to an argument among the Iga shinobi, as a number of them doubted Hanzō's loyalty and motives due to his long absence from Iga and his service to Tokugawa Ieyasu.[3]
When Naoe tried to speak up, she was shot down, leading to one of the shinobi, Furuta Tanji, dismissing her as unworthy of being part of the Iga ikki. Momochi Sandayu proposed a duel to settle the dispute, which both Naoe and Tanji accepted. Ultimately, Naoe prevailed and defeated Tanji, who apologized for doubting her. The assembly then resumed and Naoe was formally initiated into the Iga ikki before the shinobi left the shrine to make their stand against Nobunaga.[3]
In 1582, Naoe and her ally, the samurai Yasuke, returned to the Aekuni Shrine and prayed at two of its smaller shrines.[1]
