Æthelstan (894 – 939) was the son of Edward the Elder, ruling as King of the Anglo-Saxons from 924 until 927, then as King of the English from 927 until his death.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Life as ætheling[edit | edit source]

Æthelstan followed his father Edward in continuing his grandfather Alfred the Great's legacy of uniting all of England by driving out the Vikings. Together, they would go on to defeat the Danish princes of East Anglia, the five boroughs, and Jorvík.[2]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Generations after his reign and death, his eventual successor King Edgar would undo all of Edward's and Æthelstan's hard work trying to purge their lands of Danes due to his overly-peaceful reign allowing the Vikings to regroup.[2]
