Lupo Gallego

Lupo Gallego was a notorious thief and later Spanish Assassin active during the Reconquista.

Biography

Lupo Gallego was known throughout Spain as the legendary King of Thieves in the late 15th century. He was the founder and leader of the Spanish Thieves' Guild based out of Madrid, which earned a massive fortune while paying tremendous bribes to corrupt officials and the Spanish Inquisition to ensure continued operation.

Reputed to be the greatest thief to have ever lived, accounts state that Lupo was able to pilfer anything, from anyone, at any time without warning or detection. He eventually became the father of two beautiful daughters, Luisa and Rosa, who he trained in the countless secrets of the family business.

As the Inquisition grew in power, King Ferdinand II of Aragon, through the influence of Grand Inquisitor Tomás de Torquemada, claimed an example needed to be made in the name of the Catholic Church. This set in motion a bloody conflict between the Thieves' Guild and Inquisition soldiers that Lupo knew he could not win alone. In desperate need of allies, Lupo and his Guild sided with the Brotherhood of Assassins, embraced the Creed and never looked back.

Sometime after being recruited, Lupo encountered the nobleman Jaime del Rada. Lupo, knowing of Jaime's love of gambling, contacted him with an offer to sell him a valuable work of art that had been acquired illegally. Lupo's instincts were right: Jaime was intrigued by the thrill of the illegal transaction. Lupo was subsequently impressed by Jaime's commitment to his values, which were in line with the Brotherhood's, and recommended that he be recruited.

In 1489, Lupo entrusted Jaime with five paintings by Leonardo da Vinci and instructed to find a buyer for them. However Jaime foolishly gambled the paintings away to an Inquisition captain, Diego de Burgos, who then split the paintings and gave each to one of his subordinates. Lupo, ashamed at his misjudgment of Jaime called the Brotherhood to help return the painting and clean up the mess Jaime made. Jaime himself was ashamed by his actions and helped in the retrieval.

Lupo Gallego was a pragmatic man who was only concerned with profits, never politics.

Skills and equipment

Lupo was an expert at lockpicking and stealth, as well as being averagely skilled at disarming traps. During combat, Lupo could strike at an enemy's weak point before assuming evasive manoeuvres. Adding to his combat prowess, he possessed the reflexes of a fencer making his evasiveness that much easier. While at headquarters, Lupo had a certain expertise in business and helped generating revenue for his allies.

Lupo owned a personal spear, Piercing Howl which he used to deadly effect in combat. He was also adorned in his own set of Lunar Robes.

Behind the scenes

Lupo Gallego is a playable hero in Assassin's Creed: Rebellion, he is a legendary rarity unlockable costing 25 DNA fragments. His class is Shadow, and his subclass is Stealth. Lupo shares his epithet and character design with the Italian Assassin Il Lupo and the Prowler Animi Avatar in Abstergo Industries' primary stage of the Animi Training Program.

Etymology

Lupo is Italian for 'wolf', and Gallego is a Spanish surname indicating origins from Galicia.
