Professor Zachary Morgenstern is an employee of Abstergo Industries' Cryptology department.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In October 2016, Simon Hathaway relived the genetic memories of his ancestor Gabriel Laxart and saw Jacques de Molay's scribblings inside the Château de Chinon using Eagle Vision. Knowing of Zachary's love of decoding ancient symbols, he was recommended to decipher them.[1]

A few days later, however, when Simon contacted Zachary via video call to ask about the scribblings, the latter claimed that he had not received any files from Dr. Victoria Bibeau, who was supposed to send him the graffiti for decoding. Although Zachary and his department knew about a graffiti from a previous simulation, no files pertaining to Simon's session had turned up. Simon, briefly taken aback by this revelation, went quiet while Zachary asked if he wanted him to look into it further, but Simon declined and ended the call.[2]

Another few days later, Zachary's unawareness of the subject was brought up within the Templars' Inner Sanctum by Simon to the Abstergo CEO Alan Rikkin.[3]

Personality and traits[edit | edit source]

Zachary Morgenstern was described as having a "kindly visage."[2] He was noted by Simon Hathaway as enjoying analyzing ancient graffiti.[1] Alan Rikkin once told Simon that Zachary "could talk [his] ear off" regarding anything related to cryptology.[3] Simon also wasn't sure of Zachary's personal allegiance to the Templar Order, as they were so secretive that not even members could tell each other apart.[4] He did, however, hold Zachary in high regard, as he trusted him to decipher Jacques de Molay's graffiti.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Zachary Morgenstern is a character appearing in the 2016 novel Assassin's Creed: Heresy, written by Christie Golden.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Zachary is an English masculine personal name derived from Zacharias, which is the Latin form of the Hebrew Zekharyahu (זְכַרְיָה), meaning 'Yahweh has remembered' from the Hebrew elements yahu (־יהו) "Yahweh, God" and zakhar (זֵכֶר) "to remember".[5] The surname Morgenstern is derived from the Middle German words morgen, meaning 'morning', and stern, meaning 'star'.[6] Morgenstern is also the weapon known in English as morningstar.
