Donegal (Old Gaelic: Dún na nGall; lit.: Fort of the Foreigners) is a town in County Donegal, Ireland that was once a ringfort occupied by the Norse during the Medieval period.

History[edit | edit source]

Circa 879, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir had to attain a Kings' Pass, in order to infiltrate Aileach without suspicion. After a conversation with High King Flann Sinna and his poetess, Ciara ingen Medba, Eivor was told that one of Donegal's residents must have one of these passes. Traveling to Donegal, she investigated the settlement and found a Norse soldier carrying a Kings' Pass. Stealing the pass from the warrior, she left the settlement and headed for Aileach to find her cousin, Bárid mac Ímair, the King of Dublin.[1]

During her time in Ireland, Eivor and her longship crew raided the settlement and later found and claimed Druidic Bracers from a chest within one of the settlement's buildings.[2]
