Reed boats are simple boats made of reeds bound together. They are one of the oldest forms of naval transport known to humans.
History[edit | edit source]
Reed boats were widely used in Egypt during the 1st century BCE, by Egyptians themselves, but also by Greeks and other ethnicities living in the country.[1] In Memphis, reed boats were used by the residents to navigate through the canals of the city, with the crocodile hunter Thutmose being one of them.[2]
In 47 BCE, during the Battle of the Nile, the pharaoh Ptolemy XIII attempted to escape using a reed boat, having realised his army was losing the fight. However, he perished when the boat came under attack by a float of crocodiles.[3]
