A view of the Quicksand Bay

The Quicksand Bay was a bay in the Kingdom of Pelops in Elis, Greece. Found in the southern tip of the region, it was located between the Aegean Sea and the inland marshy waters. Due to the vast amounts of water in the ground, the sandy ground could act as quicksand, hence the name.

History[edit | edit source]

During the Peloponnesian War, bandits had set up their camp in the bay, and used it as their base while they raided the travelers on the roads. One of these was the Argive sculptor Polykleitos, whose tools, a chisel and a mace, the bandits took, leaving him to the side of the road. Fortunately for him, the Spartan misthios Kassandra heard his wails, and agreed to help him.[1]

The bandits of the camp were thus attacked by Kassandra seeking for the tools.[1] While there, she also slew the leader of the bandits, freed their captives, and claimed their valuables.[2]
