Leofwine was a thegn of East Anglia who served during the reign of King Edmund in the 9th century.
Biography[edit | edit source]
A friend of the ealdorman Lerion, Leofwine swore loyalty to him and promised to provide soldiers for Lerion's planned coup against King Burgred of Mercia, provided Lerion could convince Ælla of Northumbria to support their plan.[1] However, Leofwine betrayed Lerion and reported the planned coup to King Edmund, which led to the ealdorman's execution for treason.[2]
As a reward for bringing Lerion's treasonous acts to light, fellow thegn Æthelstan, acting on behalf of King Edmund, sent a letter to Leofwine which listed the king's wishes to reward a third of Lerion's estate to him, as well as making arrangements to deal with Lerion's daughters.[2]
