Knidos

Knidos was an ancient Greek city located in Caria, a region of Western Anatolia.

History

Knidos' location in Anatolia, like many other Greek poleis made it a target of frequent attacks by the Achaemenid Empire. By the late 6th century BCE, the city was a subject of Cyrus the Great's empire.

Between 475 and 450 BCE, the Knidians build the lesche in Delphi, which was later renowned for displaying two paintings by Polygnotos, one ancient Greece's most famous artists.

In 467 BCE, the Athenians led by Kimon defeated the Persians at the Battle of the Eurymedon, which led to the liberation of Knidos from Persian rule.
