Muli
Muli (died c. 871) was a Danish Viking who fought under jarl Osbern during the Viking invasion of England in the 9th century.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Muli was sworn to jarl Osbern and fought at the Battle of Ashdown. The battle proved to be a Saxon victory as many warriors and their jarls fell in combat. After Osbern's death in the battle,[1] Muli joined Geirmund Hjörrsson as a member of the Hel-hides because he had developed a relationship with him, as did other former warriors of Osbern. As one of the older and experienced warriors, Muli, along with Steinólfur and Birna Gormsdóttir, began training the younger warriors under Geirmund's order.[2]
Muli and the other Hel-hides followed Geirmund, who was ordered to take over Wælingford. After a cleverly devised plan by Geirmund, Muli joined the majority of the Hel-hides to storm the stronghold while Geirmund, Thorgrim, and Rafn used a scare tactic to drive the remaining Saxon soldiers away. The plan worked as the next morning, Wælingford was empty. Guthrum congratulated the company as he detailed the next step against the Saxons at Bedwyn.[3]
Death[edit | edit source]
After leaving Wælingford, Muli joined his company and the rest of the Great Heathen Army on their fight at Bedwyn against King Æthelred and Alfred's army. Although the Vikings won the fight, Muli died in combat and was later found by Geirmund.[4]
