Hjalmgunnar
Hjalmgunnar was the King of the Goths in Norse mythology.
Mythology[edit | edit source]
Hjalmgunnar is briefly mentioned as an elderly man in the short poem Helreið Brynhildar from the Poetic Edda, where he fought the young king Agnarr Geirröðsson.[1] Although Odin had promised Hjalmgunnar a great victory, Brunhild[2] brought him down in battle and he was cast down with the shameful dead.[3]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
In Eivor Varinsdottir's visions of Odin's time at Niflheimr, Hjalmgunnar was the Lord of Døkkerland, the midlands of the realm. Though he once dreamt to be lauded in Asgard, in these dreams, Odin's broken oath angered him and he set about rebuilding himself into an instrument of revenge,[3] using abandoned appendages and discarded flesh,[2] though the connections that made up his haphazardly reconstructed nervous system were weak to lightning.[3]
