The entrance of the Cave of Iphimedeia

The Cave of Iphimedeia was a shallow, half-submerged cave on the eastern shore of Zeus' Cove on Naxos Island, Greece.

According to the myths, Iphimedeia, a mortal woman, fell in love with the god Poseidon. In her longing, she walked the shores of the island, gathering sea water into her lap. After some while, she gave birth to the giant twin sons of Poseidon, the Aloadai, Otos and Ephialtes.

In memory of her tale, the Naxians named a cave in Iphimedeia's honor. That cave was visited by the Spartan misthios Kassandra during the Peloponnesian War.
