Captain Aetes was a Greek soldier stationed in Dionysias Wharf, Faiyum, Egypt. Aetes had a paternalistic view of his duty, claiming it was for Greek and Egyptian security, saying that the Egyptians "would never know true civilization" if left to themselves. He commanded his men to "protect and educate them" by whatever deemed necessary despite Egyptian resistance.[1]
