For me, Assassin's Creed is not simply a game that you simply play when you are bored. Assassin's Creed is a lifestyle. I got the original game in December 2007. I took a look at the box and my reaction was: 'Yeah, it looks pretty cool', but I expected it to be one of those games I play once and get bored of it. I'm the kind of person who gives certain things only one chance before I tire of the game and sell it. For example, I just could not get through any Halo or Fallout games. Just simply dull games with tedious gameplay and boring, if not confusing gameplay.
Anyway, Christmas day 2007, I put the game into my Xbox hoping it would be a good play. And how it beat my expectations! I was immediately drawn into its revolutionary swordfighing and free-running engine. I was amazed by its graphics, which were unlike any other game I had seen. But most of all, it had the best story. A blend of actual hisorical events and fiction with some sci-fi thrown in there as well. My jaw reached the ground when I saw the twist ending and I prayed the sequel would be here soon.
Months later, the prayers of many people were answered when Assassin's Creed II was released. With any other game, I would patiently wait until Christmas until I would get the game - but the tension was too much. My brother and I insisted on buying the game on its release. How could this game top the first? This is how! I'm sure I need not tell you how the gameplay evolved onto a higher level than ever. A wider arsenal weapons than I could have imagined! More activities than I could have predicted! A bigger and more intense storyline than I could have dreamed! Assassin's Creed, for me had become the pinnacle of gaming. Alas, there were drawbacks. Aside from certain graphical issues which I don't need to bring forward, the only way to replay missions was to start the game again. There was no freedom in the Animus 2.0 as its predecessor had. But, I was captivated by the game and held my breath for the next game.
Brotherhood came as quite a surprise for me, to be honest. I expected the series to jump immediately to AC3, and at first was disappointed that I thought I had to wait a long time for the story I loved to continue (of course I was a fool). I originally thought Brotherhood would be a minor spin-off with a different gameplay system and no relevance to the Desmond aspect of the story. A few YouTube videos by UbiSoft later, I was already wetting myself in the anticipation. The graphics had clearly advanced, the gameply - although looking similar to AC2 - had grown to a more dynamic way of playing and the unexpected Multiplayer mode made the game essential for me to buy. Now, i can't seem to stop playing Brotherhood. It has become a very part of my system. I don't know how to describe it instead of it being a FUCKING AWESOME GAME.
I am shitting myself waiting for Revelations. I will not sit down until that game is in my console and I am bossing the crap out of it.
I have recently got hold of the three novels: Renaissance, Brotherhood and The Secret Crusade. Love 'em. Just love 'em.
Favourite AC moments:
Altair's first leap of faith.
Discovering the power of the apple.
Dual hidden blades? This is awesome!
Altair's cameo.
Leonardo's flying machine.
Unlocking Altair's armour.
Entering the Vault.
Exiting the vault.
The Monteriggioni attack.
Rome.
Using the Apple.
Defeating Cesare.
Locating the Apple in 2012.
Best AC Lines:
'I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I percieved that this also was a chasing of the wind, for in much wisdom is much grief, and he that increaseth knowledge, increaseth sorrow.'
- Al Mualim
Rodrigo Borgia: Kind of you to bring me the Apple. Now, give it here!
Ezio: Via a farti fottere.
- Borgia and Ezio in the Vatican.
Other games: Red Dead Redemption - A particular favourite of mine aside from the AC franchise about a former outlaw in the American Old West, 1911, hunting down his former gangmates in order to save his wife and son from the corrupt Federal government.
RDR: Undead nightmare - An alternate twist on the story of Red Dead Redemption in which the undead and various other hellish creatures march on the world of the living.
Call of Duty - I have enjoyed the recent COD games, but I have doubts on the franchise's future.
L.A. Noire - A dark detective thriller about a WWII veteran in the LAPD investigating a series of different crimes in 1940's LA. The game uses investigation, interrogation and action to follow the story in a city where everone has something to hide.
Gears of War - A futuristic war between the endangered human race and the Locusts - a race of beings determined to exterminate all humans in a bloody war where loss and death are met at every corner.
