Tomb of Menoikeus

The shrine atop the Tomb of Menoikeus

The Tomb of Menoikeus was a gravesite located outside the city of Thebes, and dedicated to Menoikeus, a Thebian man in Greek mythology.

During the Peloponnesian War, the tomb was claimed by a pack of lions. When Pibos, an apprentice of Gorgias, explored the location, the lions slew him and devoured a piece of a medallion Pibos was carrying. Soon afterwards, the Spartan misthios Kassandra avenged Pibos' death and claimed the medallion piece from the lion.

Behind the scenes

The Greek writer Pausanias mentions visiting the tomb of Menoikeus in the 2nd century AD in his Description of Greece.
