Ouidah, also spelled Whydah, is a city in the Republic of Benin, known for having been the main port of the Kingdom of Whydah[1] and a major trading post of the African Gold Coast.[2]
History[edit | edit source]
In 1716, the English named a ship after Ouidah.[2] Also in the early 18th century, the French slave ship of Le Protée, under the protection of L'Alexandre, brought slaves from Senegal and Ouidah to the West Indies[3] until it was sunk by pirate Alonzo Batilla.[4]
As Edward Kenway tracked down Bartholomew Roberts along the coast of Africa, he came upon the aftermath of a massacre in January 1722, where Roberts had attacked 12 ships anchored at Whydah.[5]
