Novgorod, later Veliky Novgorod, is one of the oldest cities in Russia.
History[edit | edit source]
Originally a small fort, Varangian chieftain of the Rus' Rurik built Novgorod into the heart of the Rus' trading routes.[1] From there, Rurik and his companion Oleg[2] negociated trade with many merchants and nations, including the Norse-Gaelic Kingdom of Dublin in Ireland.[3]
