Private Gerald Collingfield was a English soldier who fought in World War I.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1914, Gerald was deployed with the British Army in France. In December, he wrote a letter to his friend Alfie back in the United Kingdom. In it, he commented that Alfie was lucky for missing out conscription due to his leg condition. He also wrote that missing out the war was a blessing as it felt more like a punishment, due to the soldiers having to dig out a new trench and spend their time in the cold and muddy fields. Gerald was later heavily injured in a battle, forcing him to return to England and recuperate in a military hospital for the rest of the war.[1]
In 1916, Gerald's letter was recovered by the British Assassin Lydia Frye in London.[1]
